@glasgowdan You clearly have alot of qualifications. Perhaps you can share your scientific evidence that shows these products are safe. I'm sure "Doris public" would benefit from this education.
I don't need to prove anything. I have no connections to the business that sells it, and it's people shouting for it to be banned who need to prove it's doing what they say it's doing. And so far the evidence has been insufficient. The Californian case is going to drag on for a long time.
This is the last comment I shall make here as it's now a circular argument. @glasgowdan I'm sure the recent case in America must be a worry for you as someone who works alot with these products. All I would say, is please just consider looking at alternatives, even if you feel you can't go organic completely. It's not just for the environment, but your own long-term health. No job in the world is worth risking your wellbeing for.
"Perhaps you can share your scientific evidence that shows these products are safe."
@Jules41 there is a lot of evidence that the products are safe. The US FDA states it, the UK govt states it. That's not the problem. The problem is corporate and farming lobbying, the terms of the scientific investigation, the vast billions of the line globally. We have to have a transparent analysis of what counts as "safe". The goal posts are moving (as with DDT, thalidamide, radium added to food etc).
I think we can all agree that these organisations are only interested in making vast profits..........as with the tobacco industry. It was always known the damage cigarettes could and have done and continue to do. The tobacco industry has always lied about the damage their products cause...........I suspect the same of Monsanto.......time will indeed tell the whole story.
I understand that you feel that you have little choice if you are to continue in your chosen career ... but can you not accept that those of us who only have one garden to tend prefer not to use it or at least don't recommend it as the first course of action?
I think this is the nub of it. Most people here, especially those asking questions, are not professional gardeners dealing with hundreds of gardens. They are dealing with just one. Even most of those who are professionals are either retired or are dealing with a smaller number, and the advice offered is appropriate to that. The nature of a forum tends toward 'what would you do in this situation?' - which is why people use forums - to get a range of opinion and experience rather than solely official advice. Why shouldn't people say what they would do?
I agree that opinions and facts can get muddled sometimes, such as the statement "all the members hate weedkillers" - opinion, not evidence-based fact. But it still comes back to appropriateness. It might not be easy to avoid pesticides when you're looking after 100 gardens in a limited time, but in one garden it's certainly possible.
'If you have a garden and a library, you have everything you need.'
re 'all members hate weedkillers' I think that depends on your own attitude, I am frequently shocked by the use and overuse of all chemicals by members here. also by those who can't tell fact from opinion
Interesting that the only quote you're giving is my use of the word "all", (yep, I should have put "almost" in front of it... get over it), rather than comments following the OP declaring glyphosate as extremely harmful to bees, ecosystem, humans... where's the facts backing those opinions up?
