They're often growing in pots of other plants, so an unsuspecting customer might easily get sold one. Think I'd be pretty p*ssed off if I paid 14 quid for one of those
For the sake of clarity, that's NOT the thistle which is the Emblem of Scotland. ( not that I'm suggesting @Fairygirl would have made such an error)
pansyface Indeed not Hosta. The spear thistle [cirsium vulgare] is the one generally regarded as our national flower. That one [above] is the one you see everywhere and on the hills, which is where that pic was taken. I forget what it's called. It likes to lurk just where you put your hand when scrambling up steep bits in spring....
Of course - our 'national emblem' is actually the unicorn. Make of that what you will.....
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
Love echinops when it's just the steely blue globes / buds. Not quite so keen when the flowers open - although the bees love it & it's a nice colour. Hate it if I (lazily) let it goes to seed - because it seeds everywhere in my garden and is then officially (in my book) a thuggish weed.
Just for the record I have never referred to it as a thistle - always echinops. For me thistles are the bu$$ers growing in the neighbouring field, setting seed ready to blow into my garden. And I would never refer to B&Q as a garden centre - they only seem to sell half dead plants....
Heaven is ... sitting in the garden with a G&T and a cat while watching the sun go down
I love it when it's covered in happy bees but find the seedlings often come up a dull, grey/blue which is far less attractive to me, but not the insects, so sometimes it's worth paying for a named plant propagated by division if you can't do it yourself.
Vendée - 20kms from Atlantic coast.
