I wonder if you walked into a garden centre and said " I'd like a thistle please" how long it would be before they got you the " thistle" you were looking for. Using botanical names is not being " pedantic " it's a world wide recognised system of plant identification and recognition.

An attitude you would likely find in your local B&Q. Those who don't already have a third level qualification, though not necessarily in horticulture, are usually working towards one and using their part time job earnings for beer money.
They're often growing in pots of other plants, so an unsuspecting customer might easily get sold one. Think I'd be pretty p*ssed off if I paid 14 quid for one of those
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
