Hi all, still here Pete 8 just as confused may have to delve deeper, it was 4 for damsons 1 for sloe, several just plain interested in Gin, Iamweedy seems to mix everything with gin👩‍🍳 Mary370 just wants to plonk it in. B3 wants to drown the rhubarb, Obelixx being in France knows just what to do with anything edible or slurpable, Asarum has already hit the bottle, thank you fidgetbones although I am still not convinced. Lovely hearing from you all

I 'donate' all the sloes on my blackthorn hedge to my sister and a lady who stay in the area. I don't drink, so they're of no use to me! The birds don't really eat them either.

Here’s one for Mary370 from Limerick.

There is a lady who wants fruity gin
To mix with rhubarb seems a cardinal sin
She asked for I.D on Gardeners World
Confusion over Damsons and Sloes soon unfurled
Shes no idea now just where to begin.

    Thanks all Kathie

    Fruit gins - yum!

I had a good blackcurrant harvest this year - and still had some of last year's in the freezer. Hence - 1.5litres of blackcurrant gin is now steeping away at the back of the cupboard..... already tastes yum.

Top tip @kathie51d - if you're making any fruit gin use the cheap, basic, own brand stuff from one of the large supermarkets. More complex botanicals in more expensive gin can actually make for a less pleasant taste.

I also usually use less sugar than most of the recipes out there - I don't like sweet syrupy liqueur style drinks. Be your own judge. If it sounds like a lot of sugar it probably is too much. Maybe use half and then try a teaspoon after a week or so. You can always add more but you can't take it out.

Most difficult part is waiting for it to be ready

If you pick sloes your hands get stabbed by thorns. Does the same thing happen if you pick damsons?

No - damson trees have no thorns.
Sloes also go by the name blackthorn
