I don't know if it's a male/female thing but OH and I are completely different when it comes to finding our way around. I like maps; I'm a geographer (or was, in a former life...). Give me an accurate map, with a scale so I know how long it'll take to get to the next junction, and I can go anywhere. OH, on the other hand - though he too is good with maps - has the most amazing spatial memory. I now know better than to ask him how to get to - say - B&Q in Halifax. Rather than saying "It's SW of the centre, just off the A something or other; look, here it is on the map" he'll say "Well. You remember that roundabout where the windscreen wipers stopped working in 1978? You take the second exit and it's on your left."
Since 2019 I've lived in east Clare, in the west of Ireland.
I can go in one door of a large shop and come out of another and I am completely lost .OH never gets lost . No matter where we were he could always find his way back to the car park. Unfortunately he isn’t well enough to go out very often now.
My husband can't navigate but I can - without even turning the map upside down! His preferred method is to chuck the map behind him and loudly offer to do the driving. He can multi-task. He can spit the dummy and throw his toys out of the pram at the same time.
I have very poor short term memory .But I can remember not only my mothers Coop number but the next door neighbours. When I was small I used to pay the milk man when mum was busy .The numbers have stuck in my brain.
