I gave myself a touch of the heat stroke today. After a load of water and a lie down I've cooled off enough to just have a throbbing headache I'm glad the sickness passed quickly though, that's always the worst bit. Now I've got to try and fix the washing machine which also seems to be suffering from heatstroke.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.
We don't really know how to deal with weather extremes in this country. It looks like we'll have to get used to it. At least mending your washing machine will keep you out of the sun! Have you checked the filters and the brushes?
Doh! My lawn is mostly weeds and moss so I've killed them and now there's only a few blades of grass.
My plastic grass doesn't look real
I post on here so that I don't say anything unhelpful elsewhere.
Don’t forget ‘ my laurels are going brown’ shall I cut them down, I know I’ve asked these questions 50 times but I still don’t want to listen to what you advise’

Yep it was nice and cool in the utility room and I feel more normal now. Filters and pumps seem ok but there is not much left of the brushes so I've got a new set coming tomorrow. We have about 3 day's supply of nappies at a push but no one wants 3 day old nappies hanging around in this heat I've also spent my emergency fund fixing the boiler this month already so I'm crossing everything that I don't have to buy a new washing machine on top as well.

Saw after News at Ten on ITV last night, meant to be Thundery showers tomorrow, (just in time to "miss" the solar eclipse and good shots of Mars, then eh!) but looking at the map looks as though it misses me completely, scooping shower water out of the bath, doing my bit. Went to lovelly plant nursery/garden yesterday chap (lives on site) says he has been told Arlington Resevoir (our nearest) has a good supply) thats because I havent been wasting it! Heard on Radio 4 a couple of days ago, "this hasnt by any means been the hottest, driest summer in the past 5 years, 2015, was (aparently!!) hotter/drier, we had a hose pipe ban here, 2013, April, must have had a lot of rain that year though, because my Rodgersia leaves were about 18 inches across, and the whole plant was as big as me, never been like that since. Also had a fantastic crop of plums that year.
@Lyn I'm considering a laurel hedge after all that malarkey. Are they good for nesting and wildlife? They look a bit 'open weave' to me but preferable to my first idea which was Thuja.
"This hasn't by any means been the hottest, driest summer in the past 5 years"
It's certainly the longest extended period without rain, for a long time, nationally, and the longest run of high temperature. Weather bods and news people come up with assorted meaningless stats. Like "the day with most fog for Herts in July since 2013." Aggregate stats over the long term are more meaningful. So, there may have been places in the UK that reached over 34oC in the last five years but I'm more interested in the national picture.
