Yum! My wife is going to give the cucumber soup recipe a go at some point this week - maybe we'll try the gin idea too since we both really like the stuff! *hic*
I have grown ridge (marketmore) for 3 seasons and I've always had an excellent crop, high yield and great flavor.
When seeds germinate keep them moist but not waterlogged
I put some compost around the shoots once grown
When they flower feed with tomato feed
let them trail - they seem to produce well but if you wants to add some height just put good sized plant pots here and there about the cucumbers and you can train them over the pots -
to be honest I think this variety are perfectly happy trailing...
Also let them grow to a good size - in my first year of growing these I picked them quite small - now I leave them to grow to quite size - the taste is in no way compromised - they're really refreshing and delicious - peel off the skin though!
So my cucumbers are still growing strong! We must have easily had around 100-150 cucumbers so far and there is no sign of the plants giving up just yet (picked around 5 at the weekend). The growbag versions have unfortunately died off - the raised bed seemed to work much better.
We've done all sorts with them - hot cucumber soup, cold mint and cucumber soup (not a personal favourite, the cream didn't go well with the mint in my opinion) and lots of chutneys, pickles and relish! I think we're both well-stocked for the winter and for wrapping up as potential Christmas presents too! They've also come in very handy for my lunches to take to work - keeping up with the plants has been tough-going at times (for a few weeks we were yielding around 15 cucumbers per weekend so had to give them to parents and neighbours so that we didn't waste too much!).
We also had some gin with a couple of fresh slices of cucumber - yum! Have found the forums really helpful to get me back into growing veg again, especially all the great recipes you've all shared.
I would definitely recommend Marketmore too - they're so easy to grow! We opted to setup a structure to support them which seemed to encourage them more, along with keeping tabs on the flowers growing (picking off where necessary) and giving them plenty of water.
I definitely think we'll be opting for a smaller plot next year - maybe half the amount of plants haha! Possibly splitting the bed and growing alongside raspberries, or beetroot as the troughs for the latter didn't work out too well.
Good amount of crop @Shoxt3r my four plants have given over 50, and picked three today. Two normal and two mini varieties just from the local GC. Better crop than last year and will be growing just mini next year as flavour is better. Good to hear you have put yours to good use, can't wait to eat the soup in the cold weather of winter thinking I've made this. Very satisfying. 😀
