Thanks all. Bit of an update I bought a couple of growbags (reusable, 34L and 40L in one pack for just £2.50, bargain!) and transferred 5 of the plants across from the bed - 2 in the smaller one and the other 3 in the other.
Unfortunately it seems that while transferring I sliced into the roots of some of the existing, smaller plants which have seemingly died off now. I'll keep watering and maybe they'll revive. Otherwise they seem nicely spaced out now and will hopefully get growing again.
I also put tomato feed over all of them so that should push them along.
When you have too many cucumbers make some of this ... it's very easy and totally delicious
Sweet cucumber pickle
2lb cucumber 1 large green pepper 2 large onions 2 oz salt
½ pt cider or wine vinegar 8 oz soft brown sugar ½ tsp ground turmeric ¼ tsp ground cloves ½ tsp celery seeds 1 dsp mustard seeds
Wash cucumber but do not peel. Peel onions. De-seed pepper.
Thinly slice all prepared vegetables and place in a large bowl. Add salt and mix well. Cover and leave to stand for at least 3 hours. Rinse vegetables well, in a colander, under running, cold water. Squeeze out as much liquid as possible.
Place in a large pan, add vinegar and bring to the boil. Simmer until vegetables are soft, about 20 mins (well, I found it a bit longer).
Add sugar and spices to the pan, stir to dissolve and boil for a further 10 mins.
Pour hot pickle into hot, sterilized jars and cap immediately with sterilized lids.
N.B. In my experience you need to hide it from your partner or he will eat it all
Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
Another great recipe! I look forward to trying these.
Bit of an update - the plants seem to be doing well. With the reshuffle unfortunately we did lose one younger plant but the others are looking healthy so far. Plenty of watering being done in the evening to keep them going too.
Something I have noticed is that a couple of the plants are uprooting themselves - I added some more compost to cover it but I'm not convinced. Is this due to over/under-watering, or something else?
I have grown a couple of melons ,put them outside with the cucumbers.they are mingling nicely .iim leaving them to see what comes ..... up to now I've a selection of both
