    To deter cats and dogs

    1 cup vinegar
2 tblsps. chilli paste with garlic (sold in Asian markets)
    1 Qt. water

    Mix together and spray.
I urge anyone who read the comment above not to use chili powder to deter cats in your garden. Chili is toxic and can be extremely dangerous to cats. They can get it in their paws and rub it in their eyes when they clean themselves, it can really hurt and irritate them as they will scratch and could do actual damage to their eyes.

I did some further research on this. It appears that the concern is that cats can't really smell dry chilli powder on its own or that it doesn't deter them well enough to stop them digging. The recipe above though uses smelly ingredients and fresh chilli paste that increases the repellant odour so should deter cats from coming into contact with it. The repellent odour comes from the capsaicin in chilli peppers (see link below which also shows how quickly the capsaicin breaks down).

I've found evidence that eating chilli plants is dangerous to cats but still nothing that supports the theory that cats scratch their own eyes due to contact with chilli. Given that chilli doesn't seem to have much repellent effect anyway though it doesn't seem like the risk to animals in worth it. The article below is very helpful and it should be noted that "Capsaicin is toxic to bees and other beneficial insects".

If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.

@Millie Molly Mandy the RSPB deterrent turned up today. I can hear it, clear as day, like a mobile phone going off. I must have better hearing than I thought. It's not on the edge of my range, either. I'm amazed others can't. I will now be trying it out on all my friends and family, forget the cats. image

I have just witnessed two baby blackbirds killed by a particularly evil cat who visits my garden, would this work to stop them coming in if im ever lucky enough to have birds nest in my garden again?

If it's audible maybe it'll dissuade cold callers too.

Just for info the RSPB spec says:

"High quality speaker emits series of modulating ultrasound frequencies 20-24 kHz  repellent to cats"

    From Wikipedia

"The human range is commonly given as 20 to 20,000 Hz... Under ideal laboratory conditions, humans can hear sound as low as 12 Hz and as high as 28 kHz"

So if you have good hearing you should be hearing the low end of the noises at 20kHz but it is possible you can hear the full range. I can hear them but I can also hear bats too on a quiet night.

Shoot the buggers. That's the solution.

If cats run along / or jump onto your fence before entering your garden, run a line a couple of inches above the fence, i used fishing line but, you could use string or something....

I had cats in every day, pooing & killing birds etc & since doing this I have not seen a single cat come in!

They jump up now and leap straight back off when they can't keep their balance on the fence.

The birds don't seem to mind landing it on it so that is a bonus too!

    Give it a try!

    Cheer,
    Graeme
