Ashley, bedding plants like petunias are annuals. The seed is sown in the spring and the plants flower until frost kills them. Tagetes and Busy-Lizzies are other bedding plants that are commonly bought for summer flowers.
No Ashley the RHS information will apply to your area. They list nearly 2000 petunias on their site but the ones in your garden centre will be the trumpet shaped very colourful annuals. As long as you can recognise a petunia don't worry about the different names otherwise you will be on petunias for ages.
That's really all i want to do, to be able to recognize plants not necessarily knowing anything about them but just recognizing them. How do i go about learning what plants look like?
You can Google the name of the plant or look at the flower picture on a packet of seeds if your garden centre sells seeds. The packet will also tell you if the plant is an annual or a perennial.
By looking at them. Look at them in your garden centre, people's gardens, parks, photos, nursery websites. Have just one picture of the flower shape for an annual. Try just one plant for a week or so. That will help fix it in your memory. Can you make word pictures in your mind? For example can you picture all the trumpet shaped flowers of petunias playing in an orchestra?
I tell you what flower caught my eye and id like to be able to recognize it, i went to my mate's house, he's got a colourful garden with all kind of flowers, but the one that i want to recognize is Gazania. He has orange and a few white Gazania.
