I have now given in and moved some plants away from his track. And from the patch of hard soil that he likes to sunbathe on. Hopefully there will be fewer casualties now.

Must be something in the name. Our dog also called George is destroying one of our borders. We have a visiting hedgehog and he thinks it's a football, flattening all in his path. It's great to have a hedgehog but I wish he/she would just visit at night when George is in bed!! Most people want to encourage hedgehogs but does anybody know how to deter them - garlic spray?
I have a lovely plant with beautiful leaves growing tall and strong, even in this heat. I noticed it a week ago and it's grown about 4 inches. Was really looking forward to see how big it would get.
Until a few minutes ago when I watched George pull the last leaf off it and eat it. All that's left is the stalk.
Flipping dog!

Had more adventures with the dog. Went out for his last walk and he did his usual thing of charging into the bushes without looking. I heard him squeal and then he ran over to me and stood by my side, which is very unusual for him. So I turned on my torch and was horrified to see blood on his back right leg.
Luckily we weren't too far from home and he's let me clean it but he won't let me have a proper look at his paw to see where the cut is. So I will leave it until the morning and see if his foot is hot or he's still in pain. It's hurting at the moment cos he's curled up in a little ball looking sorry for himself.

I have a Phalene, hes 13 and can still keep up with a greyhound!) (yup you ll probably have to look it up) he has hair not fur, no undercoat or oil, gets various spikey seed things stuck in his coat, nigthmare to remove, 2 man job, as he hates it. Both of mine go into through the beds, sun bath on the soil. the other is a border collie now 3.5, she used to dig, especially if she saw us diggin, dond think she was helping just copying, we had to put a picket fence and gate along beside our bungalow because she kept digging and ruining newly planted stuff, then she chewed the top of the gate/fence, luckily the chewing stopped, diggin we get the occasional hole! Hope George is OK
Hope George is OK. OH had to take our terrier type - rescue so breed unknown but 18 kilos of ratter - to the vets this summer after she came off worst when she thought a coypu was just a bigger rat. Punctured muzzle and torn lip so much cleaning and antiseptic and antibiotics. She's fine now but hasn't gone near another coypu tho she does still roll in their poo and it stinks.

It sounds as if your hedgehog may be suffering in this prolonged hot dry spell ... hedgehogs seen out during the day are usually quite poorly.
Put some water out in a plant pot saucer for it and keep it topped up.
If it's still about during the day phone your nearest rescue centre or take it to your nearest vet.

Agree that hedgehog is struggling and needs help.
