They grow from tubers, but some will self seed into gravel, such as R. alpina. My Kew Beauty did produce seed one year, it produced a mixed bag of seedlings. It was thought to be a form of R. cautleyoides, but is now thought to be a cross between R. cautleyoides and R. humeana.
