  • Have a look in the middle of each group of leaves, if it’s eucomus it will have a small pineapple like flower starting to grow. Mine are just showing this.
  • Hi Chrissy, would you mind uploading a picture of your eucomus, please? Thanks.

My eucomis have broader leaves, and are in a tighter swirl, unspotted.
No pineapples on them as yet.

And LizzyK said the stem resembled bamboo and they have deep roots and difficult to get out. If it is eucomis, they are bulbs and very easy to get out and the stem does not resemble bamboo!!. So I am still discombobulated.

  • Hi Chrissy, thanks for the photos. I have checked my plants and there’s nothing growing in the middle but I will continue to observe as it grows.

Were they late emerging,  as in coming up in June?   I have Roscoeas that are only just emerging, start as little  pointed shoots, then look similar to that.  They have a small tuber, similar in shape to a dahlia tuber, but usually deep, around six inches down.
  • Yes, they only popped up at the beginning of June. I don't know if they're tubers though.

Is it a new garden to you.? Roscoeas are not common , and unlikely to just appear from  a stray seed.  I have had to put them in a bed on their own. I had a habit of putting a fork through an emerging clump when they were mixed up with other perennials.
  • It was my sister’s garden. She became ill and stopped working on the garden. Eventually she passed away and I now have the garden. I left things for a year to see what was there already and a few bulbs bloomed. I’m sure I dug this up before because I thought it was knotweed as it exists in our area. A friend also gave me plants but I’m sure this wasn’t one of them. I do try to label them but I’ve missed this somehow. It is possible squirrels brought them in as this year I found a stray daffodil growing which I know I would never plant.
