Sunflower - claret

I have some claret sunflowers in pots. They are about a foot high and in large enough pots for now. Is there any advantage in keeping them in pots and planting them out only when they've outgrown the pots?
Will size make them any less vulnerable to slugs and drought?

    Once the stems are thick and hairy , the slugs tend to leave them alone.  Letting the root runs spread further, stabilises the plant as it gets taller.

    I think I'll wait until they're hairy and make sure they have some support then. Thanks fidget :)

    I might do mine later today. It's looking hopeful that they will survive as they have got to a good height - about a foot. Mine were the ones we got free from GW mag. Lots of other are sprouting from dropped bird food, so it might be a sunflower year!

    Safety in numbers maybe.
    Mine are about 2ft and hairy.
    It'll be interesting to see what's there in the morning.

    My self seeded borage and digitalis are making it now they've got all hairy. I hadn't thought much before about the hair:slug ratio but it does seem to affect things.
