How is it a cop out? If you want every cat to be kept indoors at all times then just say so.

How many cats have you seen on a lead? Have you tried to walk a cat on a lead yourself? This is getting ridiculous now 🙄.

My cats are in before 7pm every night because it's dinner time. Then they are kept in all night. They spend most of the day lazing about the house anyway.

On the other hand,I couldn't sleep one night recently and saw a few cats wandering around. Funnily enough I have yet to find any cat poo in my garden which is what this discussion seems to be getting so hysterical about. Maybe it has been foxes all along.

  • Purplerain, I am not going to justify or explain my hobby to you.  You clearly have no understanding of it and why would you?  It's a 'minority' hobby that some people understandably have strange notions about and over the years I have learned to not try to 'educate' people (unless they have a genuine interest in knowing of course) who hold those sort of views.

I do however have to work hard at a paid job to, amongst other things, financially support my hobby - without which I would certainly not be able to continue it.  I am a professional (ie qualified, insured, etc) pet sitter, mostly cats and most of which are non-pedigrees.  The vast majority of my lovely clients are, like yourself, caring and responsible cat owners, many of whom have given homes to rescue cats.  Some of the cats I know 'personally' via the volunteer work I do for a large, local cat shelter/sanctuary.

I am genuinely sorry that you feel my post was aimed at "people like you" simply because you gave a home to two moggies.  I'm afraid you will have to accept though that through my lifetime's experience of owning cats, working with cats/their owners and my volunteer work it is clear there are a vast number of irresponsible owners out there who take no responsibility whatsoever for their cats' mess and their instinctive behaviors which impact negatively on other people.

  • Incidentally, I have no problem with anyone breeding a 'moggie' litter so long as they are held to the same standards as I am.

Ignoring your superior comment about me having no understanding of your "hobby" I accept the rest of your explanation.

I am still trying to get to the answer about the control of domestic cats apart from walking them on a lead or keeping them indoors. None of that solves the feral cat issue does it? Are posters here wanting mass euthenasia of cats and afraid to say so?

I would rather have a clear line of discussion rather than some of the beating about the bush posts I have read.

  • I did not mean to sound superior.  It was a sincere comment; I don't expect people to have any insight into something that is very minority and receives practically no media, etc, interest.

I've seen quite a few cats being walked on and off lead, often with a dog alongside. It can be done so I wouldn't regard it as ridiculous!
On and off the lead scroggin? Doesn't that count as roaming 🙂.

The point was made earlier in the thread that it's very hard to cull 'feral' cats without knowing if they are actually feral or just a free roaming pet. If domestic cats were controlled, chipped and neutered it would be a big step in reducing feral cat numbers in the future. If it was made law that all pet cats had to be microchipped then it could open the door to an effective scheme of trapping feral cats for rehoming, neutering and euthenasia.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.
