The thing hanging from my tree is a ball of natural sheeps wool. It used to be huge but the birds take bits off it to line their nests (which is what it’s there for). I put some out every year.

ps. Nothing wrong with solar lights!

I  get a kick out of leaving out coloured wool left over from knitting projects. It's childish, I know. But the idea of pink and purple nests makes me grin.

I like hanging baskets cos I have a small garden that needs all the up space I can get. I'm planning to try wild flowers in them this year, like borage. Wish me luck.

mm - you'll probably need it. High level borage - it self seeds everywhere when it's at ground level. From high up it'll get absolutely everywhere  :)

I've never understood why 'people' dislike yellow flowers. Only white narcissus allowed. Don't get it at all. I have french marigolds, rudbeckia, yellow tulips most years. I'm currently pondering buying a yellow verbascum.
And I have a pampas grass - albeit a miniature one - only 3 feet tall.
No hanging baskets here - too windy - but I have been known to hang up an old sheep feed bucket with some holes punched in the bottom as a strawberry planter. Tres chic. Not

  • Love the idea of multicoloured nests Fire!
Not sure about borage in hanging baskets though? Borage is huge! Mine grows to 4ft with a really thick stem. Maybe you’ve got capacious baskets though? (Actress -> bishop)

@Fire Please make sure your nesting wool is PURE wool and not a polyester/fibre mix as there have been reports of chicks getting their legs tangled up in man made fibres and the RSPB advise against that particular combination.

You can buy big bales on eBay for about 7 quid. Raw and unwashed.
