I think the main lesson I have learnt is not to try and impose on plants what I want/think I want them to do. I now try to research the origins, climate and soil requirements of any plant that catches my eye and I fancy adding to my garden. I would be a wealthy woman if I had back all of the money I have wasted on buying plants not suited to my garden.
Another big lesson I have learned is one of patience. I never rush now to commit what I think is a corpse to the compost heap. Wait. I give the plant 3 times longer than I think it needs to recover and show signs of life, very often a tiny shoot will appear and grow, eventually.
Me too. I've got 4 plants still in their pots, bought them because they were on offer. Don't even think I particularly like them or if they're suited to my soil.
@Joyce Goldenlily Same as. Don't be tempted in a garden centre by the nice looking plants. Research, research and then research again. Find the plants that are suited to your conditions and then research some more to find the best varieties and suppliers.
Any online shopping after about 10pm is often a disaster for me. I'm too sleepy to make good decisions and just end up clicking on lovely looking plants. I have a file that I save plant ideas in and try and sit on the thought for at least a full month. Then buy when lots of research has been done and I am fully conscious and wide awake. No late night "what the hell" for me. She said.
