Clematis Suggestions and Advice

Hi Everyone.

I'm thinking of adding some clematis to scramble through this viburnum and add some summer interest.  I understand that viticella would be a good option.

How many plants would be needed to cover the shrub?  Just one or would two (or more) be better?  If it's two plants do you think I should go for the same variety or go for two different colours?

    One viticella will definitely be enough for that shrub.   They tend to get more vigorous and produce more stems each year if planted well and pruned and fed.

    There is a poster on here who holds the national collection of viticella clems and has a nursery selling them and other clems tho he doesn't sell thru this site cos it's against the rules.   He is always happy to help tho so I suggest you wait for him to pop in or else contact him direct at https://www.hawthornes-nursery.co.uk/

    I've been taking a look at a few options.  I'm particularly taken with Super Nova http://www.taylorsclematis.co.uk/Super-Nova.html

    The flower has a lovely, unusual shape.

    That's a fairly standard shape for a clematis but the petal veining is good.   This is what an academic, non commercial site says about it - http://www.clematis.hull.ac.uk/new-clemdetail.cfm?dbkey=3953

    You can search that site for other viticellas and hundreds more.   If you look at viticellas on Richard's site, Hawthornes, you will see how many other forms of viticella flower there are and use the Hull website to confirm size and flowering periods.

    In my Belgian garden I bought my clems from a Belgian specialist nursery run by 2 brothers who helpfully labelled their clems with degrees of hardiness.  When you can expect periods of -20C or worse in winter that really helps limit the choices.

    I'm trying a clematis mandchurica from Hawthorns, just planted it and can't wait to see what it looks like. It apparently dies down each winter.

    Most do.  Very exciting when you see the new shoots in spring.  Remember that slimesters love them!

    Hi Lizzie, I'm probably being very dim but where is the shopping basket/ cart option to purchase from where you bought your Mandchurica clematis? There are a couple of clematis l like there but can't see a option to buy online.

    Oh Thankyou Obelixx that's very kind. There is such a wonderful selection on there. It'll be hard to only choose two but I've set myself a limit and must stick to it.
