He's a bit young for me, and I'd be way too old for him, but a refreshing change, even though veg isn't my thing too much, but it's a start...
I like his idea with guttering though, and the writer does confirm the rather obvious definition of 'a gardener'.. see you on Gardeners' World?.. well, that would be nice..
I do wonder also if the writer has seen the thread here. Something rather similar about it..
The guttering trick was shown by Geoff H on GW in the 80s. Sarah Raven showed it again when she was a guest presenter for GW from Berryfields.
The bits of MDs garden I like are the wilder bits such as the woodland and white gardens. I don't get on at all with those borders hemmed in behind hedges and grasses and I can't tell you how pleased I was when he dug up that courtyard of very dull box balls. Far too many tall hedges too. I like some space and light.

I like a MD garden but not everything like many people have said - hedges far to tall - gaps between the hedges to narrow - ugly box blight hedges needs to go - grass section and others bits and bats, it could do opening up as well. There is also a lot I like but it doesn't matter what I dislike / like its not my garden, as long as MD likes / enjoys his garden that fine by me. I could pick out likes and dislikes in every garden, I am sure people would do the same for my garden as well.
I like all the presenters on GW it not something that ever bothered me. More gardening programs on the TV the better even if you don't like the presenter.
I bet Monty would find the idea of him being a sex symbol hilarious, I'm sure that's not the effect he's going for in his gardening clothes!
He's about 30 years my senior so he's certainly not my type - I watch it just because I like gardens and plants.
I like my garden neat but I really don't like perfectly shaped shrubs - I hate seeing things like forsythias pruned into balls. I think shrubs look much better in the way they're meant to grow.
Can't you change channels? I've only ever seen him as a photo or clip on some comedy show, not in person.
None of the 3 regular Beechgrove presenters is exactly a pin-up but they all have personality and knowledge and the lovely and very knowledgeable and affable Mr Beardshaw to join them occasionally - and they acknowledge the work of the garden's staff which MD never does.

I have not watched any programme that he presents in years but,
unfortunately, his name and visage are ever present in the social media; usually in relation to some stupid utterance of his.
As
for Monty not mentioning the fact that he has help with his garden, I
think you're slightly wrong. He does and I have heard him say so
several times. I'm possibly very wrong indeed but I feel Beechgrove's Carole often
praises "the gardeners" as if to imply that the presenting group are
above the mere gardeners?? However, though I've not heard Monty "thank" his gardeners, he certainly mentions the fact that he has help.
Sam - Monty sometimes says "we". Beechgrove actually shows the gardeners working and names them, especially when delivering a project such as clearing horsetail, cutting down defunct trees and shrubs and renovating older areas of the garden.

Yes, Obelixx, he usually says "we" but I have also heard him say, "we do have help here," though as you say on Beechgrove they are shown working.
I was wondering whether the difference is because the Beechgrove ones are employed by Beechgrove whilst the ones on GW are actually employed by Monty himself??
I also believe, there are payment rules relating to appearing on a programme and additional ones if the person appearing actually speak too.

The mind boggles.
