I got fed up of pencils either breaking - because  I'm probably a bit heavy handed - I use permanent marker pens on plastic plant labels. I then use wire wool to erase the writing. Never lost a name of a plant by using this. I only use a thin line marker as opposed to a think line marker and cost about £1.50 for 3 pens from Wilko's. Normally last me through out the season

Maybe the longevity of the marker pen depends on the weather conditions where you live.  I've tried lots of different sorts but none of them last a whole season, maybe due to the amount of rain we have?  Anyway, the trusty pencil is the answer for me.  Pencil on aluminium labels seems pretty permanent, but I've almost finished up the labels I inherited from my Dad, and they're rather expensive...

I use a label printer from amazon, found out that whatever i used pen or pencil wear off, the printed labels seem to last for years with no change.

STABILO write-4-all  was recommended somewhere on the forum and it does seem great.

I found silver marker pen worked ok on black labels but I switched to a Brother labelling machine. It's not cheap (the cartridges are approx. £15 a go) but the labels last well until the plastic labels degrade in the sunlight.

Sharpies don't work for me at all and wash off in a month or so (outside). Following recommendations I now use a  Stabilio Write-4-All pen. I put out a load of test labels and after a wet winter, the writing is clear and present.

The Stabilio Write-4-All pen is what I use and have found it works well for me.I got mine from Amazon.
The ink is so durable that it is almost impossible to clean off the label to reuse (Cif cream,a scratchy sponge and elbow grease!!
Any label that shows signs of fading at any time I always re-do as soon as I notice it!
