I am aiming for both (belt and braces). I may report back later on whether 2B pencils are available in Chesterfield!! I think we still have a specialist art shop but it is quite a long walk from the car park for my old legs. (My faith in W H Smith is not great!!)

I wonder if I'm doing things wrong. Pencil never works for me at all. I will investigate. Monty uses pencil, I notice.
  • Thank you for a good laugh, Pauline 7. Firefly O, I had noticed Monty too.
W H Smith produced the goods - 6 pack of pencils from B to 6B so I am encouraged by Muddle-Up's post to get out there and try them - when (if) it stops raining.

Sharpies last longer than a couple of months for me MU - but I don't have to endure the extremes of your Scottish weather. :) They certainly last a season for me and (albeit pretty faded) they have survived 2. Pencil is more reliable and cheaper though.

Sorry to hijack the thread but has anybody used the white marker on black labels for permanent labelling of plants in the ground?

Does the white on black last longer than black on white?

I found the white marker just went blobby and didn't write clearly.

I bought some black markers with a white paint pen a couple of years ago. Some of it is now starting to come off, but I think it lasts longer that black felt tips on white labels. Looks better too.
Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
