Rose 'Madame Alfred Carrière' & frost

Last year I planted 2 climbing roses 'Madame Alfred Carrière' on a north facing wall.
In a matter of few months they have grown incredibly fast and strong and even flowered in their first year !
I was expecting them to loose their leaves over winter (I thought the foliage was deciduous but maybe this was a mistake ?) but to my surprise they did not...
Up until 2 weeks ago they both were looking incredibly healthy. But with the recent harsh frosts their leaves have now died down leaving most of the stems bare. Should I be worry about it or will the leaves grow back in spring/ summer ?

Don't worry   it's behaving perfectly normally.  You'll soon start seeing some new leafy shoots appear.

  • Thanks for the response, that's reassuring. I look forward to see them in full bloom this year !

When they're blooming, why not show us a photo  :)

I have Madame Alfred Carrière in SW France. She always keeps leaves in winter and sheds them when the new ones are ready to grow. She's very hardy, has survived -12° and snow. She's about 25 years old.
Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
  • I took a few pictures of the garden yesterday and just wanted to share one of my climbing roses. I think they are doing rather well... They certainly have put on many new leaves since my last post and are now FULL of buds. I will post another picture once they are in full bloom. I just can't wait for it!

  • By the way Busy Lizzie, I come from Dordogne too :)
  • Busy Lizzie, is your garden still open to the public ? Where about are u in Dordogne? I would love to come and visit it next time I am around!

That looks like one beautifully well trained rose and happy rose. It put all that on in one year on a north wall? Wow!

I put in shady Dr Du Jamain in the autumn and simply cannot wait for it to bloom (though I should probably disbud it to get a stronger root system going. It has a reputation for being unrobust.) You've now got me thinking about putting climbing wires all over the front of my house, lol.
  • Yes they have grown incredibly fast in their first year ! I just planted them in well rotted garden compost with some bone meal and regularly fed them with homemade nettle fertiliser. I have also used some worm juice this year and the number of bubs that have appeared is unbelievable! Amazing when I think I only planted them late last March... (they were leftovers bare root plants that had just been potted and sold on sale @ £4.50 each !)
