So, since images aren't working so I'll upload a few pics here by external links and later will do a proper upload when the system gets fixed.
So, I was talking about how in India people generally live and worship and to some extent make concessions for plants.
Here is a Ficus Bengalensis right at the side of a busy road. The sides have been made into a raised platform so the tree isn't hurt and at the same time it serves as a rest stop because traditionally, the Ficus are considered to be trees that nurture humans (It was also a Ficus that is said to have helped Buddha gain Nirvana) https://s14.postimg.org/ly1voaxb5/20180221_153446.jpg For size, use the motorcycle at its side for scale https://s14.postimg.org/alpa6mbsh/20180221_153453.jpg
Now this one is my favourite out of the three. A Gorgeous Ficus Elastica. Absolutely flush with leaves, this guy's leaf sheaths are bigger than my forearms.
What I like most is that the street has been paved around the tree, where there was no need to go out of the way to keep it. We have many trees like that, where it coexists with people and civic amenities.
No, they wouldn't touch Ficus trees or for that matter most tress. The very few incidents of carving names that do happen are in touristy places and with random, young trees. One is welcome to collect cuttings and leaves from them though, if you're a botany student or provided you explain yourself if someone asks why you are doing it or if you don't harm the tree grievously.
Then again, people vandalise the historical monuments instead, so that's bad.

I agree
Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.

Another lush Ficus Religiosa. Look at the absolutely intricate exposed roots and aerial roots. The flowers and bits of pottery are markings of people worshipping it. The name Religiosa isn't for show.xd

Look at how it is in a residential street and people don't mind it.

Durrendal - thank you for sharing those tremendous pictures. Those trees really do look as if they are hugging the earth and what a size they are too.

Excellent pictures , thank you for them .
I'll bet the locals don't vandalise or carve their names into them as is often the case here ?

Sorry about that, Hazel. It's the problem with external links. I guess you can see them safely after the image upload system is fixed?
So, I was going through my camera rolls and came across something interesting.
These are the tea gardens from where all the "Darjeeling" comes from.
