I remember visiting a flower nursery in India ( visited so many I can't remember which, maybe Madurai? ) and they were making garlands. Individual white agapanthus flower buds each wrapped in a single red rose petal. The finished garland was about 10cm thick and long enough to drape round the neck to the waist.
Stunning and hugely expensive so used for very fancy weddings and temple offerings Each garland took almost a day to complete.
Oh yes, one of central aspect of Hindu culture is plant worship, or to be precise plants are representative of earth, life and rebirth. Which is why, more often a large tree would often let be on the side of the street and the road be made around them than cutting it down. The National highway near me has beautiful, ancient Ficus trees with absolutely stunning exposed roots, aerial roots and somewhat dusty but abundant foliage.
Pretty much everyone keeps plants in whatever way they can to offer the flowers to their shrines. There's hardly a house or apartment without a pot or two. I like this aspect because this seamlessly weaves plants and nature into daily lives of people, death of an old tree in a house is often like death of a relative for a lot of people.
Some of our local councils in the UK ought to adopt Hindu plant worship ; one council in the N. of England has already felled 5000+ large street trees . Heinous crime in my opinion !

Looking forward to seeing all your pics Durrendal. There is a glitch on the site at the moment so pics are not being uploaded. This will give you time to take LOTS of pics for us to see once it is sorted out. The problem is being dealt with.
