Another rant in the Potting Shed

I know this has nothing to do with gardening , but the Potting Shed has been described as a good place to discuss and let off steam .

Living on the outskirts of a small Lincolnshire town, the last three

nights have seen repeated attempted break-ins and burglaries several times at the same properties .

One of my wifes friends , who lives alone and has hearing difficulties ,  had her garage window removed on Wednesday night and tools stolen . She's in her seventies and is understandably frightened .

Thursday night her neighbours bungalow had the french-doors forcibly removed and items stolen prior to disturbance .

What do they announce on BBC Look North last night ........???

Large numbers of Lincs and S.Yorks police are being mobilised in an attempt to control 'Hare-Coursing' in the north of the county .

At least they've got their priorities right !image

Maybe for the hares anyway .

Unfortunately, the police are not paid to prevent crime but to catch villains.  It is also well known now that they have an appalling clear up rate for burglaries.   Home owners need to be more defensive - security lights, CCTV, good garden and house locks and so on.

As for hare coursing, it is a dreadful business and the perpetrators are often criminals in other fields such as burglary etc...  Easier to catch and better publicity for the police.

I wonder what the crime statistics would be if victims thought it was worth reporting every crime.

Would you bother if you weren't going to claim on Iinsurance? Neither would I.

Unfortunately you are quite right .

There has been a massive increase in crime around here recently ; vandalism , damage to cars and property , a young woman was stopped by a car full of men in the early hours of New Years Day on her way from work at a local pub ; no street-lighting and she was obviously terrified . Fortunately another car whose occupants knew her pulled up and gave her a lift home .

What might have happened there if they hadn't seen her ?

I had high value nearly new Stihl tools in my shed ; chainsaws , strimmers etc. ; now they reside at night in a spare room in the house .

Looks as if we all need to adopt a 'fortress mentality' nowadays . Sad really .

If we want proper public services then the Great British Public have got to stop voting for the politicians who promise us the lowest taxes and we must insist on honesty about what things cost.

We can't keep telling the police and the NHS that they can cope with increased costs by increasing efficiency and making economies ... they've been doing that for so long that there's no fat left ... they're cutting into flesh now and it'll soon be the bone ... once that happens the systems, and British society, will have been damaged irreparably.

  • I know our island is different, independent etc, however we have a crime prevention officer who will advise anyone who asks for the service how they can improve the security on their property, whether a home, office, business etc. Surely you have the same service in the U.K.?

There is also a fire prevention service and often free fire alarms are fitted where necessary.

My parents were in the same predicament as the OP mentioned, given a crime number, nothing can be done, get an Alsatian they told them.  Supposing it bites a burglar? We turn a blind eye he said!

when was that? 1992!  Its never been any different, wouldn’t matter who was in government.

Perhaps it will all be ok when the kids are all given free places at uni, doing meja studies.

Sorry for rant, I’ll get my coat.

My point exactly Lyn ... It wouldn't matter who was in government cos they all try to do the job on the cheap because the Great British Public vote with their pocket not their brains ... no one wants to pay enough taxes to fund the NHS properly until it's someone they care about that's ill

and no one wants to pay an increase in council tax to pay for more police until it's them that's robbed.

No party is brave enough to point out that we get what we pay for image

I have noticed when abroad in Europe that lots of places have  metal grids and shutters over their windows and doors. Presumably this is to keep out potential intruders. It does not seem to be "British" thing.

Dove, we pay what we are asked in council tax and income tax, it’s how it’s spent that should be sorted out.

IMO The  NHS won’t get any better until it’s privatised, no other country has it and they all manage.

There are too many admin in this NHS.  One doesn’t know what the other one is doing half the time, we have terrible battles with them, maybe it’s just down here, I don’t know, but as you know, with my son, we had to resort to private treatment,  if you can afford to pay for care then I think you should.

Yes, we pay what we're asked for ... but my point is that we're not asked for enough and taxation isn't fairly weighted ... the lower paid pay a higher proportion of their income proportionately than the highest paid and that's just plain wrong.

Also it's just not true to say that no other country has a publicly funded health care system
