    The things we do for our children obelixx! That's why I joined. There were some lovely people and some absolute b*****s but that's the same everywhere.

  • We stopped sterilising things when we found her sucking a stone that had probably come out of someone's welly. We calculated that there were at least 9 different types of poo that could have been on it!

    I used to bite my nails as a child - have a very good immune system!

    B3 - they were too precious in the end and I gave up when invited to go to Ozzie toddler group with a friend I made at BCT ante-natal classes.   Her baby and mine were best buddies till she went back to Oz when he was about 4 and we're still in touch.    Some precious mums there too but at least I didn't have to sit on the floor with her and sing Row, row, row the boat.  We mums sat around the table drinking coffee and eating home made cakes while the kids played on the floor or in the garden depending on the season..   Much more fun.

     I think it may have been down to the raw eggs in the mixture too? Salmonella says Edwina ?

  • I think Lyn's childhood predates Edwina's salmonella warning ... although you wouldn't know from seeing her image

  • I always like the creamed butter & sugar bit first  but My mum admitted to me in later life it was more about not messing up the ingredients balance as the reason she tried to stop me taking any.  Getting tummy ache from the cake mix may be as much  about the flour being raw as the mix containing any pathogens.

    Remember when bacon rashers were sold with the rind still on?   My mum used to trim them off with scissors before frying the bacon and my brother and I ate them raw. We called them paddywacks, and thought them a treat, especially if there was plenty of fat on them.  Wouldn't want to do it nowadays with the poor pigs forced into unhealthy lifestyles.

    You can still get bacon with rind on. Today Daily Mail revolting article about all the pesticies on our food yuck,  My kids used to ask why my fruit and veg went off so quick, told them, because it hasnt been gased,iradiated,bleached,frozen, shipped thousands miles haha.

    Different thread, I replied to a thread on Mumsnet, said that as a child we didnt have TV,phone, car, was asked (sarcastically) if I was over 100.  Then informed cars were around in the 1800s, and Dowton Abbey had telephones in 1900, YES, but we didnt in the village where I lived, (am 67) you walked to the call box 4 old pence, I didnt even have a bike, only child parents wouldnt let me.  I would say 50% of my friends in their 60s have never learnt to drive, my late Mother never did, nor did either of my grandparents, who were born around 1900.

    I didn’t have a bike for the same reason? I still can’t ride a bike, I passed my car test in 1965, and have driven ever since.

    I think maybe my mum was likes Ian’s and just wanted me to leave it alone.

    I also liked to eat raw cabbage stumps/stalks, my wouldn’t let as she said it would give me worms.  I think in those days they were obsessed with worms or head lice?
