"AGH" Heck as like, I am doomed !!!!. Putting fresh raspberries in my porridge today I saw the fruit eat by date was yesterday, "oh mercy me" the thing being they were from Spain so how old were they before I actually got them?

    Frank.

PS the porridge was still lovely.

  • Friends of mine went on a safari trip to Kenya some years ago. There was one chap who was ignoring the tour guides advice & drinking the local water. His attitude was if it's alright for the locals is ok for me too. Turned out that at home his water came from a well at the bottom of his garden.

    Yes he was fine.

I suspect the well at the bottom of his garden doesn't have bilharzia!   Silly man to risk that..

Oooh, I lurve a pavlova, recent article in the paper most of the chickens including waitrose and M & S carried salmonella before cooking, I do treat raw meat as if its radio active.  Trouble is giving the animals and birds antibiotics has its own risks.  A woman in her 40s died in the summer after licking a spoon wnhile cake baking.

  • Obelix perhaps I should have said it wasn't local river water or anything  like that, it was the "clean water" at the hotel but they were still advised to buy expensive imported bottled water which he refused to do. We have even had that advice in far less exotic places before where they say the local water is clean but you may not be used to it so buy this expensive bottled stuff.

I suppose we will all die after doing something, you wouldn’t die before, would you?

  • On the water question, our daughter was brought up on untreated spring water. Neither we nor any of our guests have ever  been made unwell by it.

When she went to live in |Manchester she got a water filter, as the city water supply made her ill!

Our daughters went to visit some friends house and came home and said that the place smelt of bleach. the mother was a Theatre Sister and kept everywhere sterile. Those girls got every stomach bug going. Ours, brought up in clean but not sterile conditions got nothing.

Modern thinking is that children need to be exposed to germs to build up their immunity systems within the body.

Sadly the well here is definitely contaminated. The run off from the Farm land alongside is full of nasties from the manure pile. Even the local river is not clean because of it.

I remember many years ago having some NCT types around. There was one particularly snooty person with a perfect child. (The child had managed at this stage to be quite normal)

Anyway, I went into the kitchen and noticed her religiously scrubbing one of my glasses with the  mucky bottle brush I used to clean the milk bottles before I put them out on the step for collection. I smiled to myself and walked awayimage

I stopped sterilising stuff when I caught my daughter chewing a shoe -she survived.

National Childbirth Trust - some of them can be very precious about their toddlers and crawlers picking up other kids' dummies or drinking cups.   I never was and encouraged Possum to crawl about the floor and was never too hygienic - clean but not hyper.   I joined the Belgian version so Possum would have English speaking playmates as well as the locals.  Many of those "precious" babies have gone on to have asthma, eczema, hay fever........

My parents were both trained nurses and had sterilisation drummed into them.  To this day, my tum/digestion will eject "foreign" bodies whereas OH has a cast iron stomach because his mum grew up as a country girl and wasn't houseproud.   Didn't want Possum having that sort of bovver or allergies and, so far, it's worked.
