I know what you mean Ob, and I always thought that despite my father's extremely working class roots, because he - Dad - had a professional career and I have a degree and worked - was a manager even - in a skilled profession and am married to a professional, that would make me middle class. But when I filled in the 'class survey' that Dove's link referred to, it put me firmly in the working class bucket. Nothing to do with my background or my job, but to do with how much money and debt we have, what we chose to do with it and how we spend our leisure time.
I was recently reading a book which states that you can tell someone's class in the UK by whether they say 'toilet' or 'loo' or if they say 'pardon?' or 'what?'

Absolutely Hosta ... money and class don't always have anything to do with one another ... or perhaps I should qualify that ... access to funds means something very different to ostentatious displays of wealth.

That's the same in any company. Senior people re-inventing wheels because they haven't the experience to know that round ones work very well whereas people who've been around longer know it's more about adjusting tyre width and pressures to enhance performance.
We have a large TV but not gi-normous. Our old one died and this size means I can read sub-titles as long as they're not on a pale background. Why do they do that? I bought a sound enhancing thingummy cos OH has cloth ears but we hate it so gave it to Possum for her little TV.
I know about recent stagnation in social mobility Dove. It'll be even worse once this business of student fees kicks in to the statistics. Crazy, short-sighted policy. Labour govt wasn't it? Clever Socialism at work - not.

Here lies Hostafan: common and classy.
Yes, it has a ring to it, doesn't it?
I heard a survey recently that claimed if you had " electric gates and a large TV with surround sound" you were middle class.
Sounds a bit like Rich Chav to me.
Apparently if your TV is too big for your living room, you're definitely working class

Who decided what's " too big" and what happens if you have a " sitting room" or a "lounge"?
It's a minefield.

The wheel needs reinventing from time to time ... if we stuck with the first one we'd still be using these
