I've been trying to do a bee audit in the garden since there's a lot about at the moment. It's harder than it looks though. I thought I could take a few photos and ID them back at the computer but the photos never have enough information. The difference between a heath bumblebee and a garden bumblebee is whether it has a long face or not apparently. Try telling that from a photo
Anyway there's at least 7 species out there including:
Lots of red-tailed bumblebee workers
Tree bumblebees
Early bumblebee male
Common carder bees
and loads of red mason bees
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.
I've tried to do bee walk audits for the last few years and failed miserably at ID. There are about 220 species of bee in the UK alone, as I understand it; about 100 of which seem to have a buff butt.
I'd find it impossible to ID bees, other than a few. If you can't do it w.edges, what hope is there for the rest of us Those are great photos, as always. I was out today and there were loads of little orange tip butterflies on the lady's smock. I couldnt get them to stay still long enough for a good pic though, so this was the best I could do. Very rude of them to be so uncooperative
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
Out yesterdayand almost stepped on this caterpillar. There's a huge amount of willow, so I'm guessing it might be a moth which feeds on it. I tried to ID on the butterfly site I used before, but it wouldn't load up. Hopefully @wild edges will enlighten me.
