Any ideas who this fella is?
As I have the book out to identify hoverflies I can tell you that your bug looks a lot like gasteruption jaculator, which is a pretty horrific sounding name :#

My insect of the day is this equally wierd looking hoverfly. Tiny, incredibly skinny and very fast so I struggled to get an ID pic but it is bacca elongata I think. Another good aphid predator species to have in the garden.

If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.
  • Bird box camera recommendations - I know I have asked before but this time I am thinking Christmas present wish list.  Something not too complicated, and easy to set up. Perhaps something we can buy through the RSPB or Amazon. Can anyone recommend from first hand experience.

This is not what it seems! Just for fun, I took 52 photos of butterflies on my mouse garlic, aka Allium angulosum. Whenever one flew over or landed on a new flower I pressed the shutter. I then combined about three dozen shots into a single image, and brightened the flower colour while I was at it. I am not sure I like the result - it is very cluttered, while I usually prefer simple, minimalist photos, but I might do something similar another time.

Here's a pic of that same Jersey tiger moth, taken this morning in my garden. Feeding on a flower of my cone flower plant! Wings a bit damaged at the back end.

That's a great photo! Do you use a digital camera?

    Thanks!
    camera: Pentax K-5
    + lens: Tamron SPAF 90mm F/2,8 Di Macro 1:1
    + manfrotto tripod

PS.- It's not necessary to quote another member's post when you post a reaction immediately after it, especially if that previous post contains a photo, which means we see the same photo twice on the forum.
    ;)
