It looks as if it gets pruned ... When does this happen?

I cut it back at the end of the summer,  i've had this plant for three years the first year it flowered beautifully but nothing since.

Oh dear ... you've been pruning off the growth that would produce the flowers in the following year.

Prune (if needed) in early summer, straight after flowering .... and this year don't prune at all and give it a dose of Clematis food in Feb/March.

Let us know what happens next year image

  • Hello back again a year later and still no flowers on my clematis Montana, I don’t really know what to do now, fo I cut it all back and dig it up? Or leave it and just hope it flowers next year?

    Thank you

There could be a number of reasons. One is the awful winter we had which challenged many plants. However, I am wondering about your growing conditions: I have never seen such a tiny 4 year old clematis montana. It should be three times that size at least by now. Can you tell us something about the soil type and amounts of sun and rain you get in that area? Is it overshadowed by other plants or trees? The leaves look a bit yellow when I would expect them to be quite dark - what could be causing that?

It may be a silly question but when are you expecting it to flower? You may get a few flowers at this time of year but the normal time is early spring,  about March . Possibly the flowers on yours were killed by the Beast!  I wouldn't give up yet.

I think it looks hungry.  Water it well, late evening, with a 10 litre dose mixed with seaweed fertiliser, comfrey tea or tomato food.   Do this once or twice a week till the end of this month then leave it be.  Next March, give it a generous handful of slow release clematis feed worked in loosely around its roots and then give a weekly drink as above till end of July.

As has been said, it flowers early in the season and may well be hit by hard frosts.   You'll have to wait till next March or April to see if it's going to flower but it's still small so may prefer growth to flower production till it's bigger.

  • Thank you for your reply I’ve taken another photo to show you what is surrounding it I have a cherry blossom tree next to it, the soil is very clay like here but I have been mixing every year compost mix thank you for your reply I’ve taken another photo to show you what’s surrounding it I have a cherry blossom tree and an Acer the soil is very clay like here but I have been adding a compost mix to try make the soil richer for my plants. The foliage is very strong but as it’s not flowing and this is the third year I don’t really know what to do it would be such a shame to dig it up.
  • Thank you To everyone for their posts I will keep feeding it and keep my fingers crossed for next March. 🤞
