Hi all,
Hope you are having a great day. I am SO annoyed with Van Meuwens. I have just purchased a Trachelospermum jasminoides Plant, I have had 2 before and know how beautiful the scent is. This plant however does not have one and it is in flower so it should have one by now. So I get in touch and they will not allow me to send it back with courier (expecting more). I know it won't smell again because I had the same thing happen a few years ago. They should not be allowed to sell them if the description says different. Has anyone got any advice on what to do. It cost me £13 for 5 litre plant which I thought was reasonable (now I know why) - but I am cross they won't let me exchange. I am a single parent that couldn't really afford it in first place but the thought of planting it outside my kitchen window made it worthwhile. I don't really need the stress but at the same time I am really annoyed with them for being so stand offish in their emails and saying No when the order was for nearly £100! I wonder what the others will be like. The lavender plugs seem ok.

Any purchase done mail order you have the right to send it back as you was not personally there to view it applies to all items it the law .
Really? How do I go about this please Jason?
If it is a trachelospermum jasminoides then it WILL have a scent.
If it's young and there's only a few flowers maybe that's why. The scent will also be stronger on warm still days. Mine is in full flower and yesterday I hardly noticed the scent - today, despite being quite windy I can smell it all over the house and it's a bit OTT frankly

Oh it could never be over the top I adore it and recognise the scent anywhere! That's why I'm so annoyed. I can only go by my own experience and unfortunatley my other one I bought I had the same problem. I had 3 and two of them were fine (the one that didn't smell was bought from another GC) I planted it anyway because I hoped it would smell in time but it never did and I'm not prepared to do that again, as I say it isn't the plant's fault I feel sorry for it - whose fault is it?
Hiya P,
Yes it was the correct plant I know people sometimes confuse it with jasmine but it isn't part of the jasmine family but the flowers look similar and the name is a bit misleading if you aren't aware of that. The thing is - if it's outside a door or window it just HAS to smell lovely (to me) anyway!! So it will wind me up everytime if it isn't scented!
You'd need to sell your house to buy enough ess. oil of jasmine
The thing is that trachelospermum jasminoides IS a scented plant. An unscented trachelospermum jasminoides isn't an option.
If your's doesn't have a scent then either it's not a trachelospermum jasminoides or the environmental conditions are not right for it to produce a scent.
Is it the standard white flowered type?
I have 2 usual trachelospermum jasminoides and 1 with a creamy flower and narrower leaves. That isn't as strongly scented, but still very apparent

This is what I received Pete.

sorry i couldn't rotate for some reason
If you google the variety you have, Star of Toscane all references mention its strong fragrance, and a very pretty variety it is too with creamy flowers - I could be tempted
I've no doubt the scent will come when it's planted somewhere it will be happy, just have a little patience and you will get your scented reward. Keep it well-watered especially in the first season and never let the soil dry out around it in the summer or you'll likely get scale insects.
Mine is the bog standard one that's filling the house with overpowering perfume at the moment-
PS - I'd say for £13 you've got a bargain!

The old Distance Selling Regulations 2000 were replaced by the Consumer Contracts Regulations in June 2014.
The new regulations provide even stronger legal protection for people buying goods and services in any situation where they're not face-to-face with the seller.
The legislation says that consumers should have a right to a refund when items fail to match the information given prior to purchase and, often more helpfully, for any reason within a minimum 14-day cooling off period.
