Burnt grass after using weed and moss killer

Hi there, I am a complete novice seeking advice.

My father in law bought me what he thought was a fertiliser , which turned out to be moss and weed killer. Thing is I didn't think to read the 21k bag and scattered the full amount all over my grass and especially concentrating the baldy patches in hope they would flurish.

The next morning I awoke to a black lawn and very muddy patches (heavy rain all night). I have now realised that it was the wrong bag he bought and I have now treated and potentially killed my already weed and moss free grass.

I am actually very upset as my lawn was started to look really healthy and I just wanted to top up the sparse and baldy patches. I am now fearing the worst that my grass is destroyed.

I have attached pics of the product I used and what my lawn looks like on day 2. Please could I have some advice on what to do next??? Do I need to buy a fertiliser? Seed and feed ? Leave it?

You've used enough to treat 600 sq metres, which is a big area.  How big is the lawn?  There's nothing you can do to remove the treatment now, so I think all you can do is give it a couple of weeks to see if the grass starts to recover.

Even if it had been pure fertiliser, over application can still burn the grass.

  • Hi thanks for your response. I have no idea how big the lawn is. It's big but not overly massive.  As I said I am a novice and do not know much about gardening at all. I'm just so gutted my whole lawn is now black and muddy.  I also have rust on my slabs which I cannot remove :(

Well - it's a lesson learnt hopefully, Danielle. Read the instructions - they're there for a reason! It will show you the amount to use per square metre or yard, so take time to look at that if you use any products in future  image

As KT says - even feed alone if over applied would do the same.

If you have bare areas in your lawn normally, you need to address the reason(s) for that. It's usually shade, dampness, compacted ground - or a combination of all of them. Aeration, by spiking those areas with a fork, and re seeding with a suitable grass seed later should help, but you'll need to wait until the effects of the application have disappeared.

  • Yep lesson learned. So I need to wait a couple of weeks before I can seed my grass? Also should I use a fertiliser? Any recommendations please. Thank you!

That was a fertiliser, I wouldn't use any more or you'll have no grass at all. Take the opportunity to give a good spiking and just leave it for this year.

I am a very boring person, I know, but I do believe that you should read the instructions of EVERYTHING before first use. At least only your grass was injured.

Danielle - don't worry about it - we've all done these things at some point   image

As Lyn says - just leave it now. Do some spiking when the ground has dried out a bit - you said  it had got a bit of a soaking. I know you won't think so, but that will actually have prevented more damage! image

  • Thanks so much for all the advice. I have actually nearly been in tears over it. Let's hope the grass recovers and I can get the rust off my slabs

Oh 'eck - that's the iron. A good scrub and they'll be fine, I'm sure. image

I use the same thing and my lawn is beautiful at the moment,   needs a cut, but really green, a couple of weeks ago the moss and weeds had turned black and looked awful,

this garden was just a corner of a field so you can imagine what it was like when  we first started, there has never been turf or seed put on it, or any weed, feed  and moss killer, until this past couple of years, so,just to prove grass will always grow whatever you do, unless you use weed killer of course.

dont get upset, wait and see.
