Looking closer at pictures and descriptions it isn't a clematis. I also mentioned clematis to two gardening family members and was told it definitely wasn't.
I think Silver Surfer is right it does look like a cornus alba and there is a slight red to alot the stems but not all. To be fair the picture took in March when we moved in is not great and the poor thing looked so brown and dried up we weren't sure it would survive.
Will have a really good read up on what to do and when so it will a) not take over and b) survive for next year.
My 4 year old loves watching all the differnt bees on it so we've got to make sure it's well looked after.

Cornus alba siberica is the dogwood with red stems.
Cornus alba do not have red stems.
