I think the 'hard pruning' advice is relative......relative to how big it actually is. I think cutting them down to only one shoot, Clematiscrazy, may be a bit too hard.  Good that you've got your refund though.

Based in Sussex, I garden to encourage as many birds to my garden as possible.

I think it was Percy Thrower who used to say prune back to three shoots, making sure that the top one is outward facing .... something like that .... it's approximately what I do when pruning new HT roses.

  • Has J Parker improved?  I was considering placing an order with them.
  • Personally speaking I would much prefer to buy roses from Beales or David Austin.

There are other reputable suppliers but I’ve not used them ... I don’t consider Parkers to be one of them.

Hi Guernsey Donkey we have just received a very large mixed order from Parker's wholesale site. Some 250 plants my only issue was the bare root hellebore Niger which looked a bit wobegone, they've been potted up for a fortnight and are looking much more perky.

It's our third large annual delivery and plants have all done well, we've had a couple of issues but they have dealt with them. Hope this helps
  • Yes your comments are helpful @Wilderbeast as most of the previous comments have been quite negative and I would have thought that if Parkers cared about their reputation they would indeed improve.  I am pleased you are happy with your orders.  I will keep you posted if I am able to place an order.

I've used Parkers quite a bit and always been happy with the products, on one occasion when some plugs arrived a bit withered because of a late delivery they replaced without question.
  • As an update on this thread, I left the rose to see how it would develop. It actually ended up being ‘Eyes for You’ rather than ‘For Your Eyes Only’, which I actually really liked and worked out well since I’d bought a replacement anyway. I had ordered some barefoot perennials at the same time (asters and echinops) which turned out well. I’ve ordered from them again this year for my new garden 😁
  • Hi all,

I ordered the gorgeous ' For Your Eyes Only' rose bareroot from J Parkers. It turned up in March looking, as bare root roses do, like a twig.

Moving on three months and it still looks like the picture below.

I have a number of roses and they're all showing loads of new growth (including new plants). I contacted customer services and got a shirty one line response saying 'it's not dead as I can see shoots'.

I've bought another one today from the garden centre, and it looks really healthy with loads of buds.

I'm not happy - my whole order from J Parkers wasn't great quality.

    Has anyone experienced similar?

    Many thanks

Same thing happened to me. So terribly disappointed. I have patiently waited to see if those dried roots I was delivered 3 months ago would survive. Unfortunately, they are just dead twigs. Mistake I made, should have checked the reviews before ordering. Already ordered, then read the very negative reviews. Somehow was optimistic, gave them the benefit of doubt. Lesson to be learned here. READ THE REVIEWS B4 ORDERING.
Can be an online business, but the fact remains they are dealing with real people here. Customers should be treated with consideration and fairness. These items are being paid for. They are taking the money but we don't get what we're paying for. This is completely unacceptable.  This company should be stopped from trading. It's total fraud.
