not too concerned with the flames, these wouldn't last long and the heat wouldn't penetrate very deeply. I would be much more concerned over the effect of petrol soaking into the soil.
gardeners regularly use flame guns to control weeds.
A work colleague of my wife was advised to burn Pampas Grass. He poured petrol on it because it didn't burn when he tried first time. Apparently it basically exploded because the petrol fumes got trapped between sections.
I would assume sprinkling petrol on the surface of the lawn would not penetrate too deep to do much harm.If set alight quickly it would be gone in a flash!
