Fatsia Japonica

Can anyone "Help"

Up to 3 days ago we have had two healthy Fatsia Japonica's, one in the garden and one in a pot. Yesterday I noticed that several leaves had curled over and turned from light green to dark green. Closer inspection this morning revealed a red/brown furry fungus up the stems and on the back of the leaf itself. I have cut off the worst of the leafs and then sprayed the complete plant with a fungal spray. I have now looked at the potted Japonica and that to is covered in the same red/brown furry fungus again I have heavily sprayed it with the same fungal spray, now I guess all we can do is wait & see ???? Unless that is someone knows what this disease is and can offer some advice. We don't want to lose them because from small plants they have grown into 4' beauties.

Regards

Chris (Bristol)

Not in a pot in the house is it?

I grew one in the house in the '90s as a house plant and it got red spider mite.  I also had one in my last garden that got red spider mite (it was terribly dry under the canopy of a big tree) so that's something to be careful of.  I used to treat it with washing up liquid in a sprayer.

I'll take a pic tomorrow but mine (I've had a FJ in every garden I've had so far - which is 4!), looks a bit weird at the moment too.  At this time of year there can be yellow leaves at the bottom - I pull these off, and new growth coming through which is covered in brown hairs which you may have described as red/brown furry fungus.

At 4' yours is probably a bit older than my current one.  If you post a pic too we can see if what you're seeing is normal.

    Hope this is helpful.

  • Hi Cloggie

Thank you for getting back so quickly much appreciated

My potted Japonica is the largest at 4' and it has been grown upwards very fast over the last month and yes some leaves have turned yellow and fallen plus I have peeled a couple off and realise that this is normal.

I am pretty sure that this is not red spider mite and I am confident that the r/b are not hairs. I run my finger up the stem and the r/b lifts off and looks like fluffy spores and easily blow away in the slightest breeze. I will have a look again in the morning and take a photo of the damage & the fungus, I will hen upload it for you to have a look at.

    once again thanks

    Cheers

    Chris

I think you're seeing the same as me.  It may have been slightly frosted?

image When I said mine wasn't 4' yet, it is nearly.  It's filling out nicely.  I'm not going to worry about the brown bits, it'll pull through.

  • It's a rust fungus. I'm on a narrowboat with a fatsia in the bow end and saw streams of ants coming onboard this morning and they were all over the fatsia moving really slowly. Then I noticed that same red/brown dusting that you described. I found a post here: https://www.rhs.org.uk/advice/profile?pid=756
That describes what it is. Ant crack! I washed mine in the river and will perhaps try a citrus wash if it gets engulfed again.
    Hope this helps
  • Hi, I need some help pls. I've got 2 fascia japonica shrubs about 14/15 years old.
It's leaves are curling and then dy, it's looks very sorry for it self. I've enclosed some photos from sumer 2019 and now and you can clearly see that something is wrong. The 1st photo is of 2019 and 2nd was taken today.
    Hope to hear from soon.
