What a Surprise!

Whilst visiting a friend of mine this afternoon, her new Curate popped in to say hello.

The Curate was beaming with joy when discussing the progress of her recently baptised son.  When she said the baby's name was Joshua, I said, " How beautiffully Biblical."

To my utter surprise, she said "Joshua" is the Aramaic/ Hebrew/ Palestinian name for Jesus.  I felt like the greatest ignoramus on the planet!  image

but you were right it is a biblical name after all Jesus is a main stay of the bible. There is also a Joshua in the Old Testament who was a follower of Moses So I think your friend was being a bit nit picky.

Joshua would be spelt yeshua in hebrew meaning to deliver. Both my sons have biblical names and both names belonged to more than one person in the bible.

To see a world in a grain of sand and heaven in a wild flower Hold infinity in the palm of your hand and eternity in an hour.

  • She didn't actually deny, Sussexsun, that Jesus was a Biblical name, though I do see why you thought that.  The fault is entirely mine for cutting the story too short.  I think in my surprise, even mild shock, I hurried to relate it, not paying sufficient attention to the ambiguities of my own expression!

I still can't believe, though, that in these 103 years that I've been on this planet I've never even imagined that the Jewish name of Christ was Joshua!

  • Hi Mike, thank you for supplying the etymology of Jesus/Joshua.  Jesus and salvation, prophetic I think.

  • Are you 103 years old?

  • I meant to say 105! image

You're not the only one surprised by this, Danae!  I had never heard of it either.  I even feel that, probably, most non Jews are equally unaware.  Perhaps?

I would add myself to the number of the surprised too!

I note that over 500 people appear to have read this thread, yet nobody has actually said they knew that Christ's Jewish name was Joshua.  Some, of course, knew its etymology but they don't seem to imply they knew what his name was in his own language.

I've learnt something interesting and important to me.  Thank you, Danae.
