Nepeta - catmint

Teresa29Teresa29 Posts: 8

Thinking about using this plant in a new bed, I know cats like it, but will they actually be attracted to the garden?  Just that my dog will not be too impressed!  If that is the case ideas for long flowering alternatives?

Thanks

I don't think it attracts them in, I just think they roll on it if they're passing anyway.

I planted some and next morning it was flat ha ha, made me laugh.

Our cats ignore the Nepeta, until I disturb it, They go mad for the scent, so once it is planted and left alone, they will not bother with it.

My cat loves it and will stick her head in it if she is passing by it and roll around the ground beside it but she never really destroys it. I love catmint. Flowers for ages.

OK thanks for the replies, will give it a go and hope we don't attract all the moggies in the neighbourhood!

    Regards

  • I planted a couple of new ones last year, one of the local cats loved one of them in particular and regularly flattened it but it has come back quite nicely this spring!

Great plant but my cats destroyed mine completely.  They even started eating new shoots last spring.  Never came back.  I do have 3 cats and several feline visitors though.  Wrong plant for me image

Strangely one of my cats was also crazy for Viburnum image

To give the plant a good start I usually put an upturned wire hanging basket over it. That stays there until the plant has built up a reasonable spread.

Thanks, is that just to give it some support or to keep the cats off?  We don't have cats ourselves but there are one or two about that I dont want to encourage! Regards

i asked the same question last year and someone suggested Perovskia (Russian Sage) so I'm trying that instead.

The Perovskia  did catch my eye, so I am thinking of trying that too.  Thanks for the suggestion.
