John innes no 1

Hello there , I have a small bag of john innes 1 how should i use it , bearing in mind I will not be planting any seedling trays ?

    Of course you can use it for other stuff. It's probably a bit lighter than regular compost, it would probably be fine for herbs etc. It's optimised for seedlings etc but that doesn't mean it won't support other uses.

    You could just save it until you do want to raise seedlings or cuttings.

    but RHS says use john innes 1 for herbs

    Your questions have been answered with great patience.  If you have taken the time to research RHS advice, why question it on here?  And why be rude?

    If, as you say, you are a cook, you surely know the only way to see if a recipe works or a flavour combination is good, is to try it so, for heaven's sake, go and try planting something and use the compost advised for the purpose.   In metaphor - don't try and use pasta flour to bake a light fluffy cake.

    It's a bit like saying 'can you use virgin olive oil to fry bacon'? It's not really the best thing to fry bacon, it's a bit of a waste to use it to fry bacon, but yes, you can used it to fry bacon.
