John Innes 1/2/3 is a recipe for compost.

If you use the best ingredients it'll cost more - use cheap ingredients and it'll be a bit cheaper.
Of course you can mix your own if you wish - the recipes are on the web

What is a good john innes 3 brand etc to buy

It doesn't really matter - get whatever they have at the CG/supplier

For mpc I've been using Grow Wise (with added JI) this year and pleased with the results. I usually use Levingtons but now prefer Grow Wise

There should be not much difference between the nutrients in any make of JI as they are all made to the same recipe. They will however differ slightly in the loam element just because Liam's are different in different parts of the country but they should all be good quality. So don't stress over which make of JI to buy. Go for whatever your supplier of choice has.

as for grit, a couple of 15 or 20 kilo bags will do your pots.

That'll do fine - you'll have lovely herbs - just don't kill them with kindness
