Yeah sorry, the woody, peeling stems are woodbine'ish in my mind. So nothing in the Lonicera family fits? Do we think there's a flower bud on that second picture, half-way up?
Bet it has black beads, I feel it in my bones ha ha. Can't wait to find out what it is. Exciting!!
I don't think the last one is eleagnus. I agree about the stem but the leaves are all wrong. I might pop to the garden centre and see if I can find it there. As for the second one I initially thought ribes because of the leaf shape but these leaves are less rigid than those of ribes and ribes leaves tend to be indented along that central margin whereas these are raised. I do think nut might have it with physocarpus, again I will look out for it at the garden centre. Are we all agreed that no. 1 is a very sick arbutus though?
Other than that I think it's a case of waiting for the flowers on 2 and 3 and then hopefully a eureka moment
Totally agree nut, especially about no. 2 and the fact that the flower buds are still tight in April (I'm in the South). If I find anything out I shall let you know.
You are most certainly not an idiot Hosta. I trawled around the garden centre (found Bellis labelled as Daiseys!! With an 'e'!). And nut you're spot on with Physocarpus. I also saw Deutzia and Philadelphus and they were both really similar. Once the flowers come I'll know for sure.

Eleaegnus maybe?
that piece of stem in the last pic looks like an eleagnus doesn't it. But I couldn't match the leaves with any that I grow

Yes Nut, it was piece of stem that brought eleaegnus to mind. It will be easier to identify once the flowers have opened.
I am now thinking it may be Griselinia.

1. Don't know arbutus well enough to comment jandh
2. Ribes has dangley flowers before the leaves, this has leaves and tight buds.
3. good idea re going to look. a few more pics, like the whole bush to see the shape. The stems. Always more difficult from a photo.

Thanks to everyone for their help.
Might No 3 be deutizia magnifica? I've just checked mine and the developing leaves are very similar.
Agree about No 2. I'm an idiot.

Daisies spelt Daiseys, heavens above
