Ugly dumping ground

  • I was thinking of maybe selling the block pavers, then might have some extra cash? I'll probably keep some to edge flower beds. Love the idea of gravel and slab stepping stone path(if that makes sense).  Anyone fancy coming round and breaking up the concrate base???. That too is uneven, twisted my ankle several times!!!

  • I can just see the advert now.... free block paving for anyone who removes it and breaks up the concrete base.

+1 for pressure washing the block paving as a stop-gap measure until you have the funds/ideas to work out what you really want to do.

Not only will it give the blocks a new lease of life, but it'll loosen the soil/debris between the blocks and all of your weeds will lift out. Furthermore, if you blast out all of the soil/debris from between the blocks, you'll have removed the growth medium so fewer weeds will return in future (without resorting to weedkiller). You'll need to sweep kiln-dried sand between the cracks afterwards (once dry), but that's easy. IMHO clean blocks will instantly make the space feel more inspiring.

If you go down this route, a basic Karcher would be sufficient as a starting point - that will lift grime, but not lichens if you have any. I would recommend using the standard lance, and to not get wooed by the patio cleaner attachment - it's easier and quicker, but the result isn't anywhere near as good as a lance. You're looking at about a budget of £50-100 (including buying the pressure washer), and perhaps an afternoon's work. eBay is your friend if you're on a tight budget.

  • I like that idea Pottering Girl?. Perhaps I could put advert on local gossip website!!!?. Unless any of you lovely people are offering???

I think I would take up just enough pavers to erect strong posts and build a pergola and grow some scented, climbing plants up and over.   Put a table on the concrete base so you can't see it and you'll have a lovely summer seating and eating area.

Clear away the rest of the crud, clean the pavers with a pressure washer and hide those bins as advised above.

As others have said, that fence is asking to be covered in climbers for colour and perfume and with some lunarias, foxgloves and maybe Michaelmas daisies for later on you'll have a pretty and romantic area.

If you don't dealing with the weeds that come through the block paving then don't go for gravel. Even with a membrane you will get a lot more weeds than you have with your block paving.

  • What's a lunaria? I've never heard of that.

  • Ahh Honesty, I've heard of that. I'll have a look for it on next visit to garden centre.

  • Thankyou for all your suggestions?. I'm feeling a bit more positive and bit less overwhelmed!
