Fast high growing shrub/tree
Hi All,
Dealing with trees being cut down and eyesores now revealed.
Whats the simplest fastest growing shrub tree I can put down in south facing fence. I want height and privacy. Not Buddleia and I know about laurel. Ideally not too wide but I know thats asking for too much.
Would like to to be 15- 20 ft height at least. I think Portuguese Laurel might be inexpensive pretty way to go. I'm not sure about its density?
Checked out fallopia and decided absolutely no way. Bamboo of no interest. Its caused neighbours endless problems growing into road. Council asking for damages.
Has to be easy to plant and minimal maintenance.
Any feedback welcome.

Hi
Lots don't like laurel but I don't think there is a better screening shrub. Fast, beautiful all year round and thick. Another good one is red robin but that can look sparse at the bottom when it grows tall. If that isn't an issue then it is a good screen.
Hi Pottering Girl.
How high is the sparse bit when it grows tall. Three feet?
Many thanks
euclayptus grows at a frightening rate and can be grown as a hedge, but you'll have to keep it down to size at least once a year, but the blue/green silvery evergreen foliage would be different from your average privet or laurel

Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad.
Mine is 12ft and not sparse at all, it gets plenty of light and is fed yearly and is about 8 years old now. Some that I see that are probably just left to their own devises are sparse between 2/3 feet from the ground. I have it as a hedge and also as individual shrubs. The individual shrubs grow beautifully wider into a proper free flowing shrub, whilst the hedge is cropped each year and the branches tied back so the it doesn't over flow over the lawn too much. So pretty all year round.
Thank you ,Presumably its evergreen.
Will red robin grow higher than 12 feet? I'm googling but can't locate answer.
Both evergreen and everred ;-) My neighbour has a single shrub growing and that must be nearly 20 feet high. I think the literature says 5m.
Whereabouts are you Sarah? They (Photinia RR) usually look hellish up here - the climate isn't very favourable for them. Fine if you're in a drier, warmer area - not so good in colder, wetter locations.

Hi down South in Surrey I'm veering towards Laurel. Its grows faster than red robin and is very sturdy.
Just beware that laurel can get really enormous Sarah, in all directions, so you will have to manage it as it grows
