Well after much thought I  decided to get Empire Blue and White Profusion, they look nice healthy plants  and they look happy  in their places. I wonder if I shall get flowers the year, I hope so.

    You might. I hope so.

If they're in a sunny spot then I'm 99% sure you won't have to worry about their performance or flowering. I have two in the garden and if I didn't cut them back hard they'd absolutely swamp their neighbours and they both flowered profusely and put around 6-7ft of growth in their first year.

Well I'm happy to report back that both plants are looking healthy and doing well. The Emipre blue is as tall as the fence with many flowers and the white one is not far behind it. Not it bad for only 3 months growth.

My deep purple one burst into flower this week and I've just counted 6 butterflies on it. That's more than I'd seen so far this year! Numbers def seem to be down.

image   So pleased to have butterflies not to mention lots of bees all enjoying the pollen.  Not sure which type of budleja I have, having 3 of same variety but all different shades of purple. Being (as said before) a very novice gardener, I'm loving my garden and thanks to this site I'm learning every day. One of mine is over 12ft tall, how far can I prune & when please.

image  This one is nestled along a clematis which had small pink flowers and honeysuckle which comes over my fence from next door,

  • Here I prune my Budlehia either in November or Feb/March providing it isn't freezing cold.  I usually take mine down to 2 or 3 foot as they are old and well established.  I would take yours down to 2 foot but others on here may do differently.

You should dead head them and if they are tall and in a windy place you can reduce them in late autumn but otherwise you prune in Feb. Mine find life quite a challenge so I don't take them down to two foot, but if they are very vigorous they will respond well to hard pruning. I'm really glad they are doing well for you.

Thanks for the advice. Guernsey Donkey2.  I'm assuming with your user name that you live in a slightly warner place than me. I'm on the east coast  so will take on both yours and Posy's advice.

Posy, yes my garden does get quite high winds, due to being on the coast and also backing on to an open field so as your advice, will cut back late autumn and will most likely hard prune in february/march  as all three have grown vigorously this year. Only moved in the house last Oct and the larger of the three was around 3-4ft tall and now, well over 12ft.

  • 12ft!  That is high. I would imagine that at 12ft in time the tree/shrub will become bare at the bottom.  My mother had a bud. globosa which she never pruned.  It ended up looking quite straggly with very few leaves or flowers on the bottom 4 or 5 feet. Luckily she gave us a few cuttings from hers which rooted and we now have 3 or 4 of these around the garden.  I prune themimage quite hard in the winter and they are now quite nice dense shrubs.
