I subscribe to a message board patronised by ex-BBC Points of View contributors and from a few other boards. Joining is by invitation only, whereas on most boards anyone can join.
There aren't many people on that board but I bet it comes as no surprise that although there is a named moderator. They've never had to do any moderating. Everyone is well behaved.
Isn't that a bit like the Groucho Marx quote "PLEASE ACCEPT MY RESIGNATION. I DON'T WANT TO BELONG TO ANY CLUB THAT WILL ACCEPT ME AS A MEMBER."
A club where membership is by invitation only is likely only to have like minded people in it. Therefore there is little likelihood of discord. If such a club needs moderating something has gone seriously wrong with the vetting process.
It also seems you may have hit the nail on the head by use of the term 'patronised' for its membership
Well there you go, "I think you've hit the nail on the head" by your interpretation of my correct use of the word patronised. That's a wonderful example of the point I raised earlier about people "having unnecessary little digs" at other contributors. There's absolutely no need for it.
I pass. There are members who once posted a lot who have stopped, some I know had other problems taking them away from the board, some like me had a long period of illness and could not participate, some just get bored. What ever the reason the Board is here to help Gardeners with problems not for internal cage fighting. We are not dragooned into joining, can leave at anytime for whatever reason, it appears when you do stop posting the world of GW goes on its merry way hardly missing you at all, "thats Life" hello goodby carry on as normal.
When I joined the GW forum I was overjoyed as none of my family and friends loved gardening like I do. It was amazing to talk plants and gardening dreams and share my passion with those who had same passion. I am going to take a break now. I can not be doing with the upsets and will return when all is back to gardening. Thank you everyone for posting on my threads. I loved every minute of it. I will be posting same message on the other forum I have joined too. Have a lovely spring and see you in the summer xx
I'll second that BM, I've gone to pastures new too as I just can't be bothered with all the niggles and back stabbing.......and there was I thinking that gardening was a peaceful hobby!!!
I will still be looking in from time to time......but life is to short to read a load of bad feelings.
Have a wonderful spring and summer everyone and please, play nicely xx
Sad to see Beaus Mum and Flowers go. There was some bickering recently and the Editors removed the posts and banned one or two people, I think. But I thought it was back to normal now. Usually this is a friendly forum, not just cyber, I have met real people through it who have become friends.
Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
Sorry that the two of you have decided to leave this forum. I think it's easy to be confused by the actions of some people, especially for those who don't post often, or are fairly new members. There has been a lot of unpleasantness by PM, which many people will have been unaware of, a lot of it lies and rumours, and this has led to some people leaving - whether in a huff or otherwise.
I posted last weekend on a thread I clicked on by accident. it contained the 're-posting' of a previous post by someone who is no longer here. I merely tried to explain why posts, or threads, are deleted by the mods (inappropriate, abusive or offensive etc) and added that it's also up to members to be vigilant and report anything they think is unsuitable. The mods look at that, and they make a decision on whether it stays or goes. I made no reference to the cut and pasted post (which was a disgrace ) other than to say that I assumed that was why it had been removed.
The mods can't be everywhere, 24 hours a day. That's where this forum is slightly different from many others.
If someone leaves, and requests that their account is closed, everything they have posted disappears.
Incidentally - after I posted, I got the expected 'response' from the person who has gone. Such is the way of things
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

I think I've missed another memo
“It's still magic even if you know how it's done.”
Sense of humour failure???? There does seem to be a tendency for some people to be able to give it out but not accept it when returned. Ho hum.

I have seen that the grass is not totally green on the other side with the mods having to intervene and remove posts in the first week.
I am saying no more on the subject.

I'm a great advocate of " the handy ignore button" ( quite a crowd in my ignore cupboard now )
If you don't like what folk say, dump them, don't be upset by , and don't respond to it.
Some just like the attention they get by stirring .
