Could have been planted as one small plant which has spread. or could have seeded itself from someone's else's plant miles away as those pretty seed heads contain thousands of small light seeds which the wind can carry for miles.

it does spread very easily and quite quickly so it would be impossible to say for sure but if you have it in more than one place some of the plants will sure to be babies from the others.

Ok, thanks again for the advice.

ive taken a walk around the house and it seems this plant is in quite a few locations, I will post some photos so you can see the issues they are causing.

So to sum up, in your opinions these will not of been planted intentionally and should now be removed everywhere?

    Thanks.imageimageimageimage

    nutcutlet says:

Have a look at images of Carex pendula, aka Pendulous Sedge, and see if the flowers look like yours. It's a thug of a plant not suitable for polite company (I grow it but I have a large wild garden). Seeds like mad and gets everywhere, swamps everything, like your Fatsia. If the images match yours, dig it up.

I'd dig it up whatever it is, anything that's taken over to that extent is undesirable

Forgot to add, I did a google search and that's exactly what they look like in the summer.

I agree with Nut - it's a monster - have 'em all out.

    Got a pickaxe?

Watch out for seedlings, get then while they're still small

Well done and I see a trip to your local dump in your near future and a trip to the garden centre to fill the gaps left.

    Hi again,

finally managed to dig it all up all around the house, but the patch at the front had what appears to be another plant hiding behind it.

if you look at the photos the grass seems to be slightly different from the carex pendula that I've dug up, with some purple flowers, or is it carex with some purple flowers amongst it? If that makes sense.

ive held some that I've dug out next to it for comparison, should this also be dug out do you think or just left?

    many thanks.imageimage
