I inherited a really awful lawn.  I spent a few years improving it but not getting it as good as I wanted it.  I employed Green Thumb and the lawn improved dramatically.  What you pay depends on the size of your lawn and which programme you sign up to.  I have an average urban garden and signed up to the basic package.  They treat the lawn 3 or 4 times a year, can't remembr exactly.  I scarify it myself once a year.  They charge me £16 per treatment.  Just wanted to say I have no links to Green Thumb this is just my experience of them.

Have aread of this thread which has comments on Green Thumb plus DIY lawn care - http://www.gardenersworld.com/forum/plants/are-green-thumb-right-about-this-lawn/993835.html

Then see how much time and energyvyou have to do it yourself and then check out how much they'd charge to do it for you.

Getting a bad lawn back into good condition can require a lot of hard work so I suppose it depends on (a) whether you think you can do it yourself (b) want to do it yourself (c) can afford to get somebody in to do it for you.  There really is no right or wrong answer.

In the thread Obelixx links to there is a comment about the company actually being a franchise operation.  That being the case you would need to be sure that any testimonials actually refer to the person who would be doing the work for you.

  • I have a small lawn now image which I reseeded in September 2015. In March 2016 it was looking very poorly indeed so I called Green Thumb who diagnosed red thread (which I had never heard of). They come quarterly at £16 a pop and the lawn looks great. Tending a lawn is not what I want to be doing - but I still want it to look good.

For £64 a year I think it's a great service as I don't need to worry about buying chemicals, getting it wrong and the general hassle of applying evenly. I want to be planting and growing things and lying in the hammock! Another thing to bear in mind is that these guys have access to stronger/better remedies which you need a licence to use and that they use them in the correct proportions at the correct time. Money well spent imo.

We had a really awful "lawn" - horrible very heavy clay soil, grass full of moss, full of weeds, and dying off in bits.  We signed up to Greenthumb for a year to see how it would go.  They come several times a year to moss-kill, weed-kill, feed, etc and they also come once a year to hollow-tine and once to scarify.  We're getting on a bit now and we feel that having people to do the hard work is well worth it.  I have to say that after 18 months of Greenthumb treatment, our grass is looking 100% better.  Considering the price of the various chemicals and the hard work involved trying to do it ourselves, I feel it's worth the money.  The price depends on the programme you sign up to and the size of  your lawn, but you can also just have them on a one-off treatment.

What size is the lawn which is being treated for £16 a time?

    See original post

They charge according to size but £16 is the minimum (I suppose they have to cover transport, equipment etc). As I said my lawn is now very small, probably around 20 sq meters and that is well under their standard size. They will come out and have a look at your lawn for free and tell you how much it will cost. They will also do a one-off treatment if you want.

I only wanted a scarification treatment, but I was persuaded that I should have a pre-scarification as well. I accepted this but emphasised that I only wanted the two treatments. The Bedford proprietor showed me that he had ticked two treatments in the confirm box on the order form. Despite all this he added a third visit in writing at the foot of the page. So I ended up having to pay for this extra unwanted visit, which took place before any scarification had been done. It turned out that the firm had forgotten all about the scarification which was the whole reason I wanted them to come! So I had to phone them to get a last minute booking right at the end of May which was much later than it should have been.
it had been such an unhappy and disappointing experience that I wrote a letter to the proprietor asking for some explanation. All I got in return was a phone message that the proprietor had now left the firm. Still no apology!

I have been very happy with Green Thumb. My lawn is large and irregularly shaped but maybe 100’ x 90’ and was in a very story state, riddled with hawksbit and various other weeds. For £65 a month, I get the lawn scarified and aerated once a year and treated with weed killer and fertiliser about five times a year. Scarification generated a huge about of thatch - several cubic metres. The lawn now looks immensely better and I have only been using the firm for about 8 months. With continued treatment it should get even better.

A near neighbour is one of the GQT regular panellists and they use Green Thumb. If it’s good enough for them ...
