How weedy are you?

It struck me today that whilst I carefully clear away weeds and stray bits from around many of my plants, I have one border that is particularly full of weeds and 'ground cover'. I don't usually bother with much weeding in this section because I know it will soon be covered with hardy geraniums on the ground and the other perennials and shrubs filling the border.

I wondered, then, if you are ruthless weeders or allow nature to find its own way??

A thorough weeding in early spring before all the new growth comes through and that's it ( apart from dandelions or thistles) until the autumn. I don't leave much bare earth for weeds to grow.

Multiply it by a millionfold and that is my back garden image At least they die off by Summer. Why won't my other plants grow like that I wonder?

Absolutely not. I nurture some of them  and some I hate and pull out. And some I cut to ground level until they pop up again and again and......

We struggle to identify the weeds so inevitably let them grow on until we're sure one way or the other image

But as our garden isn't very well established yet and the plants are a bit sparse, we try to keep the weeds down. Once we've got more going on I'll be less concerned. I'm currently gunning for Spanish bluebells.

I keep my lawn weed free, but that appeals to my OCD. Plus it's not very big, and an annual dose of Weedol does most of the job for you.

De-weed all boarders as I can not stand to see any weed grow to it mature size. They obviously compete with other plants for nutrients if you leave them in.

If your anything like me, if I miss a weed and then see it after I have finished gardening for the day It stays on my mind and i will then go back out there, after say 5 minutes and remove it. And they say gardening is a relating pastime.imageimage

One big weed about now. Mulch heavily then just remove the docks, bindweed and " sticky Willy" as they grow. I can live with most other things

Like Joyce - I don't have lots of bare earth for long periods. I plant quite densely and have lots of evergreens or successions of planting which helps prevent weeds getting in.

I do remove weeds when I see them, before they get too big to be a problem, but it's always easier in a smaller garden too.
