Wickes own MP compost has a good texture and is peat free and no green waste. 70 litre bag for £5.45. Very good for mulching and planting and good quality for the price
Ive used Jacks Magic for the last three or four years. This year it's not as good as when I first used it. I've noticed fungal spors growing on the surface very quickly.
I bought some 'Home and Garden' and it honked something awful so have got my money back from the garden centre.
Im reluctant to buy the expensive stuff so may nip to B&Q or Homebase and try their own brands.
I tried Wyvale's own peat-free, it was awful! Lots of sticks bits of wood etc. They were really apologetic, said they would review manufacturing process and sent me a voucher!! I've now bought 3 more to try. B&Q's was almost as bad and also had a very wet and "muddy" feel. Miraclegrow, also bought at B&Q, seems pretty good but the best is clearly New Horizon which i got from Wickes. Lovely light "fluffy" texture. Definitely be my choice in future. Lots of people recommending Jack's Magic but this is peat based so doesn't meet my wish to get away from using peat in my garden!
Brought some Aldi MP compost at 40 litres for £1.99. Brought 2 bags and on inspection it looks a good mixed compost with no wood or plastic thrown it. Good for potting up and planting out. At 160 litres for £7.96 not a bad bargain
I'm using Westlands Multipurpose at the moment. £5.50 for 90L. Not sure if that's a good price or not, but the compost seems OK (if you don't mind peat). I get it when I'm going past so I consider it "free delivery".

I bought the B&Q MPC from Verve. 125ltrs for £6.93. Unless your just using this as a mulch you need to sieve it for seed growing or potting on. I always sieve it and add sharp sand in part for seed growing and potting on.
Was it the Verve MPC you bought?
'The power of accurate observation .... is commonly called cynicism by those that have not got it.
Whilst I agree with the idea of buying peat free, the reality of tests over the years shows that it simply isn't anywhere near to being a match for the mainstream composts which contain peat. Certainly any of the peat free I've tried has been so full of junk it's virtually useless. A bit like electric cars at the moment, great theory but some work needed before it's a fully practical alternative to the mainstream.
